NDP Learns Lessons in Growing Leaders with Dr. Tim Elmore
Posted 02/22/2018 01:07PM

NDP students, faculty, parents and surrounding community attended talks given by Dr. Tim Elmore on Feb. 21, about how to be and how to foster future leaders. The event was sponsored by the Rehorn Family.

Elmore spoke about how the culture has changed from generation to generation and how education and parenting must change to meet the demands of the information age.

To students he encouraged them find the "gold" (or talent) hidden in each of them. He used the analogy of a thermostat vs. a thermometer to describe leaders vs followers. "Thermometers simply reflect the climate while thermostats set the climate," he said. "Leaders need to live by their values and add value to every group to whom they belong."

For teachers, he spoke on the important balance between being timely and timeless. Elmore said, "Use what is cultural to teach what is timeless." For this, he used the example of bottled water. Getting drinkable water to people is a timeless problem while using water bottles is cultural. "Teachers are going to have to become pioneers, not settlers in order to teach Generation Y and Z students who get most of their information from portable devices. "Teacher will need to provide context to the content students obtain from the internet.

At the evening event for parents, Elmore's talk came from his book, "12 Huge Mistakes Parents Can Avoid." He warned that rewarding and rescuing your children too quickly will result in a generation of people who don't know how to problem solve or be resourceful; and in some cases develop children who suffer from arrogance, yet low self esteem.

Time ran out before Elmore could answer all the audience questions. More information can be found in his books.

Elmore is the Founder and President of Growing Leaders, a non-profit organization created to develop emerging problem solvers and decision makers. He and his team equip students on thousands of campuses across the US and around the world to think and act like authentic leaders.
