SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The top-ranked Notre Dame prep volleyball team advanced to the AIA 4A State Semifinals with a 3-0 win over No. 8 Estrella Foothills 25-13, 25-17, 25-11 Tuesday night.
“I think offensively we cleaned up our side,” said Head Coach Holly McLean. “We have been too error prone and we have focused on playing clean and still taking the risks that they need to. They played loose and it worked out well.”
The Saints were led by 13 kills each by senior Emily Brummer and freshman Evan Hendrix as the team hit .282 while forcing 21 errors and holding the Wolves to .023 hitting percentage.
“Defensively the energy was different from the get go,” said McLean. “I have not seen our team play defense with so much urgency before. I think that carried over to our offense.”
NDP led from the start in the first set but Estrella closed to 13-9 midway but the Saints finished on a 12-4 run. The second set featured three ties early and NDP led by just one (13-12 and 14-13) but again the Saints finished 11-4 to take the 2-0 lead. The Saints won four of the first five points in the third and cruised to the victory.
