Swimming Preps for Postseason with Senior Meet

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Notre Dame Prep swimming teams lost their final regular season meets to Cactus Shadows but in this unique year it was a welcomed chance to compete at home and recognize their seniors at a final meet. Cactus Shadows won the boys meet 87-76 and girls meet 91-76.

“It was a really great meet,” said senior Nick Ward, who won the 100 Fly going a 1:00.95. “We had great effort and we had a few best times from some of our teammates. It was a really good final meet and good way to end the high school season.”

NDP’s 200 Medley Relay consisting of senior Will Bansberg, freshman Winston Gilbert, Ward and senior Chris Matura won the event in 1:50.12, just out touching the Cactus Shadow team to open the meet. Bansberg was a double-event winner by taking the 200 free in 1:49.1 and won the 100 Back in 56.1. Matura won the 100 Free in a time of 1:00.2.

Ward was second in the 50 Free (24.1), while Gilbert touched second in two events including the 100 Free (1:01.8) and 100 Breaststroke (1:16.03). Sophomore Lucas Minarich was second in the 500 Free in 6:34.45. The Saints closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-Free relay in 3:38.9 behind the efforts of Matura, Minarich, Ward and Bansberg.

Senior Rhiannon Gnerer finished first in the 200 Free with a time of 2:10.9 in a season best for her and joined her teammates to close the meet on the 400 Free Relay consisting of junior Lilli Mueller, freshman Grace Vecchi and freshman Camille Devine. They finished second in a time of 4:06.82.

“I think we did really good and had a bunch of people doing their absolute best today,” said Gnerer. “I was really happy and everyone was giving their all.”

The 200 Medley Relay (Samantha Kuczaj, Elle Aister, Devine and Lilli Mueller) finished first with a time of 2:01.6 and improved their season best time by 4 seconds. Aister was a double-event winner in both the 100 Free (1:00.26) by just out touching her opponent from Cactus Shadows and the 100 Breaststroke (1:15.22).

Devine won the 100 Fly with a season’s best time of 1:06.9 and was second in the 200 IM (2:23.5). Lilli Mueller finished second in the 100 Fly in 1:14.01.

Other top swims included NDP’s 200 Free Relay consisting of Aister, Alexa Lewis, junior Grace Vecchi and Gnerer finished second in a time of 1:52.96 and Vecchi was second in the 100 Back in a season’s best of 1:07.87.
