TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior Andrew Vines scored three touchdowns and added a field goal and three PATs to help Notre Dame Prep post a 30-28 victory over Corona del Sol Friday night for the first win of the season.
The Saints (1-1) built a 17-0 lead in the game and led 24-7 at the half as the team had four scoring drives in the opening half. Vines opened the scoring with a 43-yard field goal in the first quarter. He found the end zone with the first of three scores in the second quarter, pounding in from four yard out with a 10-0 lead. Senior quarterback Braden Wells founds Brock Narveson to extend the lead to 17-0.
The Aztecs cut the lead to 17-7 with their first score but the Saints responded before the half with the second score by Vines.
Corona scored the next 21 points in the game in the second half, taking a 28-24 lead into the fourth quarter. Wells led the go ahead drive that culminated with a third TD by Vines with 7:46 left. The drive included a big catch and run by Gavin Smith, who finished with four receptions for 71 yards (unofficially).
The Saints defense that had produced an interception by Ethan Bush and two sacks by Ben Roberts needed one more big play. Tommy Romano provided it with a fumble recovery to stop late drive by the Aztecs into Notre Dame Prep territory.
The Saints needed one more late play. After failing to run out the clock, they punted back to Corona with five seconds left. A fair catch by the Aztecs setup a rare free kick attempt to win the game but it fell short.
Vines finished with 26 carries for 85 yards and three touchdowns.
