Football Falls to Salpointe in State Quarterfinals

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 7 seeded Notre Dame Prep varsity football team lost in the AIA 5A State Quarterfinals 45-42 at No. 2 Salpointe Friday night. Senior Gavin Smith had four touchdowns for the Saints including a 100-yard kickoff return. Led by the efforts of Smith, the Saints overcame a 24-7 deficit at halftime, but the second half comeback came up short.

Senior Gavin Smith had seven rushes for 95 yards with two touchdowns and four receptions for 106 yards with an additional touchdown. He added a100-yard kickoff return for yet another touchdown, finishing the game with 377 all-purpose yards.

Hudson Stych and Braden Wells added touchdowns for the Saints as well. Wells was 14-for-21 for 199 yards with two passing touchdowns in his final game. Wyatt Harris had a team-best 11 tackles to lead the team.

Smith recorded his kickoff return after the Landers had gone 31-7 in the second half to start the comeback. NDP cut the lead to 38-35 and both teams exchanged touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Salpointe held on.

Notre Dame Prep finished at 8-4 on the season. Other scores from the 5A playoffs included No. 1 Horizon defeating Cienega 45-21, No. 3 Desert Edge defeating Desert View 31-13 and No. 4 Desert Mountain edging Sunrose Mountain 17-8.
