SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Notre Dame Prep football team earned a No. 7 seed in the AIA 5A Playoff bracket announced Saturday morning and will play at No. 2 Sunnyslope on Friday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available to NDP families on GoFan via a private link until Wednesday before going on sale to the general public.
The Saints finished off the regular season with a 33-24 victory at Horizon on Friday night, earning the playoff spot.
“I thought we played well in every single facet,” said Head Coach George Prelock. “The defense played great and offensively we played outstanding. I was so happy everyone came together.”
NDP had not played in three weeks after shutting down the program for two weeks. But after allowing an opening drive touchdown by the Huskies, the Saints settled into the game and closed the gap to 8-6 on a Tyler Schweigert pass to Gavin Smith before the half.
“We made some mental errors in the first half especially in the first quarter,” said Prelock. “But after that the boys focused to the task in hand and executed. The focus was a lot better. What I tried to communicate at halftime was to take it one play at a time, 11 individual battles, win your battle and do your job. Everything will take care of itself.”
Junior Gavin Smith connected with Schweigert for his second receiving touchdown from 20 yards out to take a 13-8 lead. The Saints were setup after the punter kneeled securing a low snap.
The Saints extended the lead to 19-8 on a seven-yard pass to Kyle Farrell. The Huskies pulled within three after breaking a long run for a score. But the Saints offense continued to roll with scoring runs by Luke Nash and Ian Williamson to finish off drives to finish off their second highest-scoring game of the season.
“After the first score, we were able to make some adjustments and we were able to hold them in check the rest of the night,” said Prelock.
