PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Notre Dame Prep cross teams completed their historic season with the girls placing 16th and boys finishing 17th at the AIA Division III Cross Country Championships held at Cave Creek Golf Course. It was the first time in school history both teams advanced to the state championships in the same season.
“It was really exciting getting both teams to the state meet for the first time,” said head coach Katie Spratford. “We thought they performed really well and ran strong. They were competitive in their respective races, and it was good launching pad moving forward.”
Sophomore Evan Grawer was the top finisher for the Saints, crossing the line 12th overall in 17:07.01 to lead the boys team. Junior Alex Matura crossed the line 98th, while brother Peyton was 132nd in 19:44.7 The scoring five for the team included junior Noah Zygmunt (149th, 20:00.8) and freshman Aslan Sanchez-Avecedo (168th, 20:21.1). Junior Dylan Robertson (20:27.2) and sophomore Collin Short (21:28.1) rounded out the state team.
“Evan ran amazing,” said Spratford. “We knew as long as he could get out and establish himself in the front pack, he would run really strong. To finish 12th as a sophomore is a really big day.”
Sophomore Ava Handel crossed first for the girls in 22:06.01 to place 37th overall with junior Ella Lahr close behind in 54th with a time of 22:49.
