Boys Soccer Closes Season with 2-0 Win over Flagstaff

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Notre Dame Prep boys soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Flagstaff with goals by junior Richard Kearney and freshman Riley McMenomy. It was the seventh shutout of the season and fifth consecutive heading into the playoffs. The team has won seven straight since a 3-2 loss to Deer Valley on Feb. 10.

“We need to keep doing what we are doing, and we have good momentum,” said Head Coach Michael Navarro. “The kids are excited and motivated to keep on rolling.”

The program celebrated their five seniors before the contest and carried the momentum into the contest taking a 2-0 lead in the first half. The Saints were ranked No. 7 in the 4A conference to start the day, while the Eagles were No. 5.

“You always want to end on a positive note on senior night,” said Navarro. “Beating a team that is highly ranked above us will help us going into the playoffs.”

NDP improved to 10-1 on the season and 4-1 in 4A West Valley, one game back of Deer Valley for the region title.

Playoff brackets will be announced on Saturday from 8-10 a.m.

Based on region standings, the top team in each region will earn an automatic bid to the state tournament. The top eight (8) teams that did not win a region championship based on the AIA rankings powered by MaxPreps will complete the 16-team state tournament. The state tournament bracket will be seeded according to the overall ranking of the 16 teams. The state tournament will consist of four rounds and will be single elimination.
