NDP Wrestling had a great showing in its first meet of the season, but it fell to host Saguaro 40-36 on Monday.
Standout performances from the varsity squad included sophomores Nate Jones (8-second victory), Wyatt Pepe (2nd-period victory) and juniors Jackson Toth (2nd-period victory) and Mateo Gigena (1st-period victory).
JV wrestling fell 12-6 with a standout first win in the first period from freshman Jackson Ramos.
"It was a great pulse check for us. We were able to see what we need to improve on and what areas we are strong in," said NDP assistant Wrestling coach Kolby Mays.
Added NDP head Wrestling coach Matt Zismann, "While the result isn't what we wanted to start the season, this is a special team that can grow together and win when it matters. Jones and Toth bookended our night well with strong wins."
Next up for the Saints, they travel to Thunderbird on Wednesday, Dec. 4, for a multi-meet with the Titans, Mesquite and Show Low, followed by the Maricopa Desert Duals at Maricopa on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 and 7.
NDP has two home meets this season: Friday, Dec. 13, and Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the NDP gym.
